FOR many last Tuesday, July 11, was just another day, but for Kilmore fundraiser, Bev Carman, the day provided a good reason to celebrate.
That Tuesday marked 10 years of day oncology at the Northern Hospital and the culmination of a dream for Ms Carman and her dedicated group of supporters whose efforts brought chemotherapy to the Northern well ahead of schedule.
Thanks and recognition must also go to the local community who have given financial and moral support to the CAN DO fundraising programs over the years.
Back in 2006 Bev Carman set up Chemotherapy at the Northern Day Oncology or CAN DO as the organisation became known and raised in excess of $220,000 in its first year to help fund chemotherapy at the Northern Hospital.
There was none there at the time and for many cancer sufferers it was a 70 plus day wait for treatment at either the Austin Hospital or Peter McCallum. Ms Carman had seen her daughter suffer through the long wait for treatment.
Just on a year later on Wednesday July 11, the dream of CANDO became a reality with the opening of the Northern’s day oncology unit.
